Amanda Gier, Exercise Physiologist: "As parents, we struggle to find enough time in the day for everything – work, kids’ activities, sports and homework, family time and taking care of our family’s health, including getting enough exercise. Finding time to exercise often takes a backseat to the rest of the list.
By making exercise a family affair, you can spend quality time with your kids while improving everyone’s health at the same time. We know there are a lot of benefits to regular exercise, such as improved health, more self-confidence and lower anxiety. But exercising together as a family benefits kids beyond this.
Children are more likely to exercise if they have someone to do it with, especially someone they look up to, like their parents! Kids watch and learn from their parents, so exercising together is a great way for you to role model healthy lifelong behaviors.
Exercising as a family allows you to take care of your health while still spending time together. This time can be used to communicate about the day and what’s going on in everyone’s life.
When kids feel like their parents are paying attention to them, it improves their mood and strengthens the parent-child bond.
At the same time, by choosing fun activities the whole family can do together, you’re helping to create great memories for your kids. They may even continue the activities with their own children someday.
There are lots of great ideas for fun exercise the family can do together. You can go on hikes or nature scavenger hunts. Try an after-dinner walk and talk about the day. Try a new park or go on a bike ride together. Check out the local swimming pool.
At home, you can play tag or soccer in the back yard or set up an obstacle course. Organize a Family Olympics with different events.
There are even great activities families can do inside their own home, like dance parties, exercise videos, or Wii and Kinect competitions.
You can even have assigned weekly theme days. You’ve heard of this with nutrition: “Meatless Mondays” and “Taco Tuesdays”. Try the same with family exercise: Try-a-Park Tuesdays, Walking Wednesdays, Saturday Swims.
Get the kids involved in choosing the activities they want to do together. Exercising together as a family will make it something everyone looks forward to, instead of just one more thing to squeeze into your already busy day."
