What is Math Aquarium?
Math Aquarium is a type of traditional instructional materials use in teaching but cannot be only use by teachers in schools or for private tutorials, this can also be use by moms and dads who wish to personally teach their kids on how to be good in Math.
Not everyone loves numbers, in fact, Math seems to be a heavy subject for most of the young learners because they find it hard and boring. As a teacher, how can you let your students enjoy and get interested while studying mathematics, particularly Multiplication, Division, Addition and Subtraction (MDAS)? We will help you by teaching you on how to make a Math Aquarium that will surely arouse their interest in learning Mathematics. Applicable most for elementary learners in Grade I to IV. You can adjust the questions according to their level of understanding.
MATERIALS:
1. Empty Box (medium or size of your choice)
2. Scissors
3. Gift wrapper (color of your choice)
4. Plastic Cover
5. Scotch Tape and Glue
6. Cartolina/Colored Paper (color of your choice)
7. Magnet (cut into small cube sizes)
8. Bamboo Stick (14 to 16 inches long)
9. Hook (small)
10. Thick Thread or Yarn (2 pieces cut with 12inches /long)
11. Markers
12. Plastic Bottle (cut into can type)
13. Card Board (to serve as skeleton of paper fishes)
14. MDAS table (for reference)
PROCEDURE:
Step 1. For your aquarium:
•Cut the four sides of the empty box from the top going more than half way to the middle and leave the four corners uncut.
•Cover the whole box using gift wrapper or other type of wrapper to design your box, to make it strong, beautiful and look presentable.
•Wrap the box using plastic cover, covering upside down.
Step 2. For your fishes to catch:
•Cut cartolina/colored paper into small squares and mark them with MDAS questions.
(Ex. 5x7=?, 50-?=40, 60÷10=? Or 8+7+?). Put them in your cut plastic bottle
•Cut cartolina/colored paper into fish shape, cut another fish shape for each paper fish using the card board and paste them back to back so that the paper fishes won’t sag , mark them with the answers to your MDAS questions. Put them inside the aquarium.
Step 3. For your fishing rod:
•Cover the bamboo sticks according to your preferred design.
•Tie the hook with one end of the thread and tying the bamboo stick on the other end.
HOW TO USE?
This can be use for recitation or for group activity. After discussing your Math topic, you can test your pupils understanding by using the Math aquarium. Let them pick a question from the plastic bottle/can and let them get the answer by catching the fish inside the aquarium using the rod. This way they can learn while having fun!
