VICTORIA -- Canada's Physical Activity Guidelines show children four and under aren't active enough by new standards.

The report supported by ParticipACTION wants to get kids away from screens such as televisions, laptops, and video games.

The Canadian Pediatric Society wants children to spend more time undertaking physically active hobbies.

Four key points they support are as follows:

- Kids should get more than 180 minutes of exercise a day

- Parents with toddlers under 2 yrs should not let them be in front of any type of screen

- Children between 2-4 yrs should spend no more than 30 minutes in front of a screen

- If children are 5 yrs or older 60 min of "energetic play" should be the minimum

If measures are undertaken early in life, Dr. Richard Stanwick, Chief Medical Officer for VIHA says they will prevent diseases later on in life. A sedentary lifestyle that begins in childhood can contribute to serious health risks such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease and even cancer.

The Canadian Pediatric Society estimates as many as 26% of children between the age of 2 and 17 years are obese, and encourage parents to take the lead on family activities and diet.
