Path of Exile - Extensive Guide to the 3.9 Atlas
[ad_1]
I put out an initial version of this guide when we were a couple days into the league. This is the updated version.
Watch Haewark Hamlet (top left octant) as Watchstones are added.
Tier 0: 7 normal and 2 unique maps, tiers 3-5
Tier 1: Adds Precinct, tiers 6-9
Tier 2: Adds Dig, tiers 10-12
Tier 3: Adds Shrine, Malformation. Tiers 12-14
Tier 4: Adds Grotto, Terrace. Tiers 14-16. Also adds +1 to Awakener Level of Atlas; covered later.
Each Octant can be levelled up in this way, and each has its own rewards, its own premium maps and its own stinkers.
Your first goal upon reaching the Atlas is to earn the necessary Watchstones to start upgrading the Atlas.
Step 1: Breaking out of low tiers - first 4 watchstones and 8 watchtowers
- Initially you only have access to tier 1-5 maps
- Your goal in the first phase is to visit each of the four distant outer octants.
- Run about three maps in each outer octant, and a Conqueror will turn up and say hello, then fight you. Upon defeating them you will be rewarded with a Watchstone and access to their Watchtower. The first one will unlock the Watchstone storage grid too.
- CRITICAL WARNING: Don't slot all 4 watchstones into one tier - yet.
- Zana's daily missions and maps for sale are a huge asset here. If possible, take on missions that are far from where you've explored so far.
- You'll have holes in your Atlas. Don't worry - we'll fill those in later.
- You need to find the Watchtowers in the inner octants, in tier 3+ maps in those octants. It seems random which tier 3+ does the job.
Step 2: 4-16 Watchstones: Fighting Conquerors at progressively higher tiers
- You now only own tier 5 and lower maps. Time to upgrade.
- In each octant, you will need to spawn the Conquerors and kill them once each. The Watchstone storage boxes will tell you the minimum tier needed. Note tier 4 means 4 watchstones (no watchstones = 0)
- The inner octants require at least one watchstone socketed for the Conquerors to appear at all. So we will start with them.
- Slot one Watchstone into each inner octant, then run tier 4-5 maps you own from the outer octants. Some of the inner octant maps will drop.
- This is the time you will struggle most for maps. Use alchemy orbs on your maps, and buy Zana's stock each time you run her missions.
- By this point you should have all 8 watchtowers, and 8 watchstones.
- Now to progress further you will need to run tier 2 octants. If in doubt, consult the Atlas.
- Upgrade one octant to tier 3, one to tier 2, one to tier 1, (6 stones) and leave other stones unused. Once you hit 10 stones, add a tier 4 octant (1/2/3/4)
- Now all map drops you get at specific tiers will be concentrated in one octant at a time.
- If you can beat the Conquerors at high map tiers, then run your highest tier maps. Focus on one octant, and just keep mapping there until you own all 4 watchstones from it.
- If the high tier Conquerors are too tough, then focus on running maps in your tier 2 octant. Swap octant and keep moving around the Atlas until you have 16. Getting 16 will require beating high tier Conquerors.
- Upon getting the 16th, the quest "The Elderslayers" completes, and Zana divines the location of Sirus. He might be too hard to beat right now, but if in softcore give it a go. His loot is pretty bad until you get the Awakener Level up to 6+.
ASIDE: Awakening Level, Awakening Bonus
- There are huge rewards for running tier 14+ maps on a highly completed atlas.
- If you can beat tier 16 maps, you should run as high an Awakening Level as you can manage. Swap around which four octants you focus on, so that you chase ones where Conquerors can still drop watchstones, and so that you can get maps to drop in new locations.
Step 3: 16-32 Watchstones
- This step can be skipped for some Atlas approaches.
- This is more of the same, but 3 times slower. Conquerors take 3 times as many maps to spawn, and you will get another Sirus fight after each 4.
- Because the Awakener Level bonuses are so powerful and provide so much map oversustain, in this phase I suggest you use all watchstones you own at all times. If there's octants you've completed (i.e. got all 4 watchstones from), downrank these to tier 0 to free up their Stones.
- Zana missions. Use these on tier 16 maps - the chance of getting a Shaper Guardian map is worth it, and you can also get tier 16 versions of all maps on the Atlas. This will help you fill in Atlas holes. Zana missions are awesome this league.
Step 4: Customization
- Some maps can be isolated so that every map that drops of a given tier is that map.
- Example: If you rank up Haewark, Lex Ejoris and New Vastir to at least tier 1, the only tier 5 map on your Atlas is now Tower.
- T16 Waterways
- T8 OR T10 Jungle Valley
- T6, 9 OR 11 Arcade
- T4, 8 OR 10 Beach
- T5 Tower
- T11 Relic Chambers
- However this has an opportunity cost. Lower Awakening Level. You need to make your own decision as to which is better. If in doubt, go AL 8.
