This legendary piece of music by Paul Simon & Art Garfunkel has been brought to a whole new dimension through the arrangement by Disturbed. It has taken me the guts of a month to complete my version of Disturbed's wonderfully haunting cover. I’ll break down into a wee set of steps, what I’ve been working on during this month timespan:
(1) I watched Disturbed's performance of the track on the Conan O'Brien Late Show CONAN on TBS over and over again, until I'd written out the sheet music for each of the instruments which were performing on the show. Seriously, I think I must’ve watched the performance that many times, just so I could get every wee bar of music as close as possible to Disturbed’s performance. Puts a whole new level on tenacity doesn’t it?? (http://teamcoco.com/video).
(2) All of this music notation was then scored using the PreSonus notation software: Notion, adding in the tempi, articulation and dynamics. (https://www.presonus.com/products/Notion).
(3) Okay, now at this stage of the game I exported my Notion score as Wav. audio file, and imported it into PreSonus Recording software: Studio one 3. (http://www.presonus.com/products/Studio-One). Tweaked a bit more at the dynamics until it was ready.
(4) I audio recorded myself performing the main melody on violin, using the IK Multimedia iRig Acoustic http://www.ikmultimedia.com/products/irigacoustic) and the IK Multimedia Amplitude for iOS (http://www.ikmultimedia.com/products/amplitubeios/). Through iTunes File Sharing I was then able to import my violin audio recording into Studio One 3, and there you have it…all finished.
If there’s one thing I’d like to be able to do better, is the putting together of a video for my cover. I use iMovie OS X. I need to learn about the different techniques used, like pic ’n’ pic, etc, but sure I’ll get the hang of it hopefully soon.
